Birefringence (also called double refraction) is an optical property in which a material has two different refractive indices depending on the polarization of light passing through it. As RP Photonics defines it, the refractive index depends on the polarization direction, which is the direction of the light's electric field. Materials that look perfectly clear, such as calcite crystal, liquid crystal, stretched plastic film, or even glass under stress, can all be birefringent.
For display engineers, birefringence is both the most useful and the most troublesome property in optics. It is how every LCD switches its pixels, how compensation and wave-plate films work, and the root cause of several common defects.
The Physics in Brief
When unpolarized light enters a birefringent material, it splits into two components. Per the IEEE Technology Navigator, these are the ordinary and extraordinary rays, each traveling at a different phase velocity and, in some geometries, in a different direction.
- Ordinary ray (o-ray): Sees a fixed refractive index, no, regardless of direction.
- Extraordinary ray (e-ray): Sees an index, ne, that varies with its angle to the material's optic axis.
Three quantities matter in practice:
| Quantity | Formula | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Birefringence | Δn = ne − no | How strongly the material is anisotropic |
| Retardation | R = Δn × d | Optical path difference through thickness d (usually in nm) |
| Phase difference | δ = 2π × Δn × d / λ | How far the two components shift relative to each other |
Birefringence can be positive or negative. As RP Photonics explains, in a positive uniaxial crystal the extraordinary index is higher than the ordinary index. Because the two components fall out of step, linearly polarized light entering a birefringent layer can leave as elliptically or circularly polarized light, or as linear light rotated to a new angle. That transformation is what displays exploit.
Where Birefringence Comes From
- Intrinsic (crystalline): Natural anisotropy in crystals such as calcite and quartz.
- Molecular (liquid crystal): Rod-shaped LC molecules have a higher index along their long axis.
- Orientation (stretched polymers): Stretching aligns polymer chains. This is how retardation films are made, and also why some protective films cause defects.
- Stress-induced (photoelastic): Glass is optically isotropic, but as a Corning-related patent notes, applied stress breaks that symmetry and the glass usually becomes birefringent. The relationship is Δn = C × σ, where C is the photoelastic constant and σ is stress.
- Electrically induced: An electric field reorients LC molecules, changing their effective birefringence. Every LCD is built on this.
How Birefringence Makes an LCD Work
An LCD pixel is essentially a voltage-controlled wave plate between two polarizers. Applying voltage rotates the LC molecules, which changes the effective retardation, which changes how much light the front polarizer passes.
The key design parameter is dΔn, the product of cell gap and LC birefringence. A patent on TN LCD measurement lists it, along with twist angle, among the most important design parameters of TN and STN LCDs. To give a sense of real numbers, one VA LCD patent specifies LC Δn of 0.065 to 0.123, a cell gap of 3.0 to 6.0 µm, and dΔn of 0.25 to 0.4 µm.
From the fab side, this is why cell gap uniformity is one of the most tightly controlled parameters in LCD production. If spacer height or substrate flatness varies, dΔn varies across the panel, and that shows up as brightness and color nonuniformity (mura). LC suppliers tune Δn alongside viscosity and dielectric anisotropy: a higher-Δn mixture allows a thinner cell gap, and response time improves roughly with the square of the gap.
Birefringent Films: Putting the Effect to Work
Displays deliberately add birefringent films to correct or shape polarization:
- Compensation (retardation) films: VA and IPS panels use a-plate, c-plate, or biaxial compensation films on the outer cell surfaces. They cancel the LC layer's angle-dependent retardation so black stays black and colors don't shift at wide viewing angles.
- Quarter-wave plates: Combined with a linear polarizer, a quarter-wave film forms the circular polarizer that suppresses electrode reflections in OLEDs.
- Liquid crystal polymer coatings: Thin coated retarders are replacing stretched films in some stacks. One patent reports LC polymer compensation layers spin-coated with retardation controlled to within 3%.
When Birefringence Causes Defects
1. Stress-Induced Light Leakage in LCDs
Mechanical stress from mounting, bending, or assembly turns the glass substrates into weak, uncontrolled retarders. An Apple patent notes that bending display layers during housing installation can create stress-induced birefringence that causes light leakage in the dark state. In IPS panels, a finger or pen press can create the same effect: one patent describes touch pressure producing a white spot on a black screen. Curved monitors are especially sensitive, and Corning research shows the substrate stress state determines dark-state leakage in curved LCDs. In my experience, corner and edge "clouding" seen during black-screen inspection is very often a mechanical design issue (frame pressure, adhesive shrinkage, or thermal mismatch), not a panel defect.
2. Rainbow Mura from PET Films
PET is cheaper and tougher than TAC as a polarizer protective or touch-sensor film, but it is highly birefringent. A polarizer patent notes that stretched PET films can have in-plane retardation of 3,000 nm or more. Different wavelengths emerge with different polarization states, so viewers, especially those wearing polarized sunglasses, see rainbow-colored bands. The usual fix is "super retardation film" (SRF), PET with retardation pushed so high (often 8,000 nm or more) that the color fringes become too fine for the eye to resolve.
3. Reduced Contrast in Projectors and AR Optics
In polarizing beam splitter systems, any birefringence in the glass prism reduces contrast. According to a 3M patent, glass makers responded by developing glass with a low stress-optic coefficient that develops very little birefringence under stress. The same concern applies today to waveguides and pancake lenses in AR/VR headsets.
Summary
| Role | Example | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Image formation | LC layer in every LCD | Voltage-controlled retardation creates grayscale |
| Optical correction | Compensation films, quarter-wave plates | Wider viewing angle, lower OLED reflection |
| Defect source | Stressed glass, PET films, molded plastics | Light leakage, mura, rainbow patterns, lower contrast |
Bottom line: Birefringence is the polarization dependence of refractive index. Controlled precisely, it is the engine of LCD technology and the basis of nearly every optical film in a display stack. Left uncontrolled, it is behind many of the mura and light-leakage defects we chase in production.
