Polarization describes the direction in which a light wave vibrates. Natural light from the sun or a backlight vibrates in all directions at once. A polarizer is a thin optical film that passes only one vibration direction and absorbs the rest. In display engineering, polarization is not a side detail: it is how an LCD forms an image at all, and how most OLEDs stay readable in daylight.
How a Display Polarizer Is Made
Most display polarizers are absorptive films. Per DisplayModule's technical overview, iodine molecules or dichroic dyes are absorbed into a polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) layer, and when the PVA film is stretched in one direction, the iodine molecules align along that stretch direction. The aligned molecules absorb light vibrating parallel to their long axis and let perpendicular light pass. The PVA core is then laminated between protective films (typically TAC or acrylic) with pressure-sensitive adhesive for attaching to the panel.
From the production side, this stack is sensitive to heat and humidity. Iodine-type films can lose polarization efficiency and shrink under high-temperature, high-humidity stress, which is why automotive and outdoor programs often specify dye-type or high-durability polarizers and run extended reliability tests.
Role of Polarization in LCDs
An LCD cannot emit light; it can only modulate it, and that modulation depends on polarization. As LG Display explains, an LCD places liquid crystals between two polarizers, oriented opposite each other (one vertical, one horizontal).
The process works like this:
- The rear polarizer converts backlight into linearly polarized light.
- The liquid crystal layer rotates the polarization by an amount set by the voltage applied through each pixel's TFT.
- The front polarizer (the "analyzer") passes or blocks the light depending on that rotation, producing grayscale.
Depending on how the liquid crystal is aligned, panels are either "Normally White" (light passes at 0V) or "Normally Black" (light is blocked at 0V). Most modern IPS and VA panels are normally black, which helps contrast.
Polarizers are also the main reason LCDs are inefficient. Simply polarizing unpolarized backlight discards roughly half of it, and according to a U.S. patent on projection displays, the typical total light transmission of an active-matrix direct-view LCD is only about 3 to 7% once polarizers, color filters, and aperture losses are counted. Panels also add compensation films between the polarizer and glass to improve viewing angle and reduce color inversion.
Role of Polarization in OLEDs
OLEDs emit their own light and do not need polarizers to form an image. They use one for a different reason: the metal electrodes behind the pixels act like a mirror. Without treatment, sunlight reflects off them and washes out black levels.
The standard fix is a circular polarizer, which combines a linear polarizer with a quarter-wave plate. Ambient light enters, becomes circularly polarized, flips handedness when it reflects off the metal electrode, and is then absorbed on the way out. One OLED patent puts the numbers at about 99.5% of specularly reflected ambient light absorbed, but about 60% of the display's own emitted light lost.
That trade-off has real costs:
- Brightness and power: Another patent notes that a common circular polarizer transmits only about 44% of emitted light, so the panel must be driven harder for the same brightness.
- Thickness and flexibility: A conventional polarizer is about 0.2 mm thick, which works against thin and foldable designs.
- Oblique leakage: A simple circular polarizer works best at normal incidence; one patent analysis describes light leakage of up to 5% for obliquely incident ambient light.
The Shift to Polarizer-Less OLED (POL-LESS / COE)
The industry is now removing the circular polarizer from many OLEDs. The leading approach is Color Filter-on-Encapsulation (COE), in which color filters and black matrices are precisely patterned on top of the OLED encapsulation layer. Because each color filter passes mainly its own subpixel's color, it absorbs most incoming ambient light while letting far more emitted light through.
DSCC's analysis of Samsung's POL-LESS structure identified three key changes: a black (instead of transparent) pixel definition layer, a new color filter, and a new black matrix. It estimated a 20 to 30% brightness gain, and up to 30% lower power when combined with LTPO.
Market adoption is accelerating. According to Omdia via OLED-Info, polarizer-free OLED shipments should reach 72 million units in 2026, up from 31 million in 2025, and almost 250 million by 2032. Polarizer-free designs already hold over 50% share in foldables. Panel makers are also working on cheaper processes: TCL CSOT has made inkjet-printed COE samples on 326 PPI OLED displays with 30% lower power than polarizer OLEDs and 6.41% reflectance.
A lower-cost alternative is the Simplified Polarizer Layer (SPL). Omdia notes that it can reduce contrast, narrow viewing angles, and weaken outdoor visibility, but its lower cost makes it attractive for budget OLED panels.
A Practical Side Effect: Polarized Sunglasses
Because the light leaving most LCDs and polarizer-equipped OLEDs is linearly polarized, it interacts with polarized sunglasses. Honor's support documentation explains that when the absorption axes of the screen and sunglasses are perpendicular, the screen appears dim or black. Rotating the device usually restores the image. In design, we avoid this by setting the polarizer axis at an angle (often 45°) or adding a retarder film above it so the output is closer to circular or elliptical polarization. This matters most for automotive, avionics, and outdoor displays, where users commonly wear polarized lenses.
Summary
| Display type | Why polarization is used | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| LCD | Required to form the image (two polarizers plus LC rotation) | Large light loss, low system efficiency |
| OLED with circular polarizer | Blocks ambient reflection from metal electrodes | Roughly half or more of emitted light lost, added thickness |
| POL-LESS OLED (COE) | Replaces polarizer with color filters and black matrix | More complex process, very low reflectance harder to match |
